First Church uses what is called a Presbyterian form of church governance, where an elected Council has the final authority for making and carrying out decisions for the entire church. Our Council is made up of the Minister(s), the Elders (who are generally responsible for the spiritual care and administration of the church), and the Deacons (who are generally responsible for leading and facilitating the financial stewardship ministry of the congregation). Through a variety of means, our Council seeks out the expressed desires of the membership as part of the decision-making process.
As part of its governance structure, First Church makes broad use of committees or teams made up of church members who work to facilitate the individual ministries of the church. Nearly all church decisions are first discussed and discerned at the committee level before they are passed along in the form of a recommended motion to the Council for its consideration. The Council, after discussing each motion, then votes for or against the motion, or an amended version of the motion. They may also opt to table the motion for further study or deliberation at an upcoming meeting.
